Q: What is slate?
A. Slate is a fine-grained, metamorphic rock. The word metamorphic comes from metamorphosis, which means “to change.” Slate is formed when minerals, usually mica, quartz, calcite, and chlorite, are compressed and heated by the earth’s crust. The process takes millions of years.
