I started working on slate and tile roofs 26 years ago. I was lucky. I was trained by an old timer who had worked on nothing but slate and tile roofs for over 25 years. He was from Germany and had been trained by old-world craftsmen. At the time, I didn’t realize how fortunate I was. He taught me some tricks of the trade that had taken him years to learn. He had an intense pride of workmanship that I admired and tried to emulate.
After seven years of that old-world apprenticeship, I started what is now Connoisseur Slate & Tile. It’s common knowledge in the trade that, if you can put up a slate roof, you can put up any kind of roof. We take pride in tackling the jobs that everyone else has either failed at or doesn’t even want to attempt.
To give you an example of the scope of our work, Connoisseur Slate and Tile recently completed a tiered, Japanese style wood shake roof on a Frank Lloyd Wright home in Riverside, Illinois. We've removed slate from the West Point Military Academy and installed it on a new home in Hinsdale. The home looks as if it’s been there for decades.
The roof is a large visual aspect of a home. We view it as a fresh canvas, awaiting the artist. Slate and tile roofs can be constructed in many different colors, styles and textures. The possibilities are almost endless. Add copper gutters and downspouts and the visual effect can leave you breathless.
